St. Thomas was an Augustinian monk and Archbishop in the 16th Century in Villanova, Spain. When the Augustinian order opened their second educational institution, they dedicated it to him, naming it Villanova College. The church, St. Thomas of Villanova, was begun in 1883 to serve the needs of the students, and the local immigrants who were working on the estates surrounding the campus.
